THE AMAZING PEOPLE WHO TOOK ON THE WORLD!
ERNEST SHACKLETON (1874-1922)
Shackleton is one of the world’s most famous explorers as he dedicated his life to exploring Antarctica and went on four expeditions (a journey with a mission) to the south pole in his lifetime.
His first two expeditions on the ships Discovery and Nimrod brought him the closest anyone had ever been to the South Pole and made many amazing discoveries on the way, but still didn’t quite reach their goal.
His third, and most famous, is an epic tale of perseverance. Their ship, aptly named Endurance, ended up trapped in the ice and sank leaving the crew completely stranded on the ice for months. Shackleton took five members to find help, trekking through treacherous and life-threatening conditions for weeks until they found a whaling station. The whole crew was rescued with no casualties, against all odds.
His fourth and final expedition aimed to travel the whole way around the Antarctic continent, but Shackleton died before it could be completed.
“Difficulties are just things to overcome, after all.”
AMELIA EARHART (1897-1937)
Amelia Earhart was a record-breaking pilot and inspiration to women in every generation since. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in a record time of 14 hours and 56 minutes and spent her spare time challenging the social norm of the time that restricted women and instead encouraged them to fly. This is where she founded an organisation of female pilots called the Ninety-Nines. Amelia continued to make history with the first solo flights from Hawaii to California, then Los Angeles to Mexico City.
Sadly, Amelia Earheart and her navigator mysteriously disappeared part-way through her journey to fly around the world. It’s believed that the plane lost fuel and went down 100 miles from Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean, but they were never found. Her story captured the imagination of the world!
“Flying may not be all plain sailing, but the fun of it is worth the price.”
